German!

I've got a GCSE Grade C in German.. not that I can remember much though!

Anyhow, I've been studying Civil Engineering this year at college and am considering taking up German in Sept. I've had a look at courses and there is a Year 1 course available for 2 hrs a week on an evening.

Anyone know what level Year 1 is?
Is it worth doing?
Will I actually get a recognised qualification?

My idea is that one day I may move to Europe and I quite like the German language... :o

Due to work issues, I may be doing Open Uni in Sept (maths), rather than going back to college to do C.Engineering :( much to my disappointment as I love my course. I just want to try and give myself the best chance possible and keep getting more qualified!

Year ! could mean pretty much anything....Is it Year one of a GCSE course?...A-Level? ...Foundation Degree? (All those lead to recognisable qualifications).

The prospectus should tell you what qualification and level you will be working towards. Why not ask to speak to the tutor? They may be able to tell you if you will struggle with the course and maybe guide you towards a more suitable course if necessary.

You're right about German by the way...it's a terrific language (and my other language!)...Viel Glueck!

Okay, I got an adult education leaflet through the door.

    It says;

    Year 1:
For complete beginners or people with very limited knowledge of their chosen language.

Successful completion of Year 1 may lead to a Level 1 Award.

    Year 2:
For people who have a basic knowledge through past learning or contact with the language.

Successful completion of years 1 & 2 may lead to a further Level 1 Award.

Level 3 & 4 are a bit advanced from the desciption - but they lead to the Level 2 award.

I think GCSE's are Level 2? but it's been 10 years since I did GCSE German, so I'm not ready for year 2 lol !

The course is £150 a year if that helps at all.

Not Open Uni no, it's at one of the local colleges in Wakefield.

I was going to do 2 x 30 point Maths courses with the Open Uni this year.

I have a feeling I'm not going to be able to go college again next year as it's 1 full weekday a week and I will probably have to work Mon-Fri 9-5 :(

German is cool :) everyone laughs at me when I say I like it lol (I didn't like it much at school tho, altho, I didn't hate it either)

    Thanks for that :)

Not sure now then. If I start at Year 2 I will be behind everyone else that has done Year 1 more recently.

I don't want to find it boring though, but a refresher would be handy.

Why not do it with the OU and count the credits towards your degree?

And you can continue with the German to intermediate level if you want.
