after putting my gas/elec consumption into various web sites they all come up with Atlantic as the cheapest but I have just found out that if ever i needed to phone them its a premium rate telephone charge and its put me off a bit. Must admit its not very often i have to phone npower who i am with now but dont relish the thought of being put on hold for minuts with a high rate. has anyone had any recent switches/dealings with them to give me a better insight as to how it works in reality?

Atlantic is part of Scottish Hydro electric. I switched to Atlantic about 4 months ago but there is no mention of Atlantic on the bill they sent me - the bill is headed as Scottisg Hydro Electric. As far as phoning them, I had to enquire about my bill as they overestimated it - they have an 0845 number, but it took over 20 mins before someone answered my call. If I knew this I would not have switched, but then, all these companies are the same these days - they all have poor customer service. They do have a competitive rate though - lets hope I don't need to call them too often. Good luck with your decision.

I'm with BG at the moment ( switching to Atlantic though ) and had to phone them recently as we've had ongoing problems accessing our online account and they only have an 0845 phone number to use. They also took up the first few minutes of the time I was paying for with some irritating blurb and then the usual "for such-and-such, press this number" maze  .
I suspect most companies now try to get those last few pennies out of us when we have to speak to someone.

I tried the numbers suggested there for BG and got told categorically that I would have to phone the 0845 number to conduct my business.

I've been with Atlantic for about 9 months and no problems so far and I get regular emailed statements. You can contact them by email if you don't want to hang on the phone.

I was with Atlantic for a while and my gas and electric bills more than doubled in price. Now I'm back with British Gas.

If by "premium rate" you mean 0845, then yes, you are correct. However, most other suppliers also run 0845 customer support. Either use their freephone number listed at https://www.saynoto0870.com or phone them on a Saturday, when you'll pay 1p per minute.

I realised that, but was simply remarking that the site didn't help me with a different Utility company phone number, which therefore shows it doesn't always supply the solution to the 0845 problem.
