Home to school transport?

Hi all,

My middle son who is 14 years old and suffers with Autism gets took to school via a Taxi service which is paid for by the local council due to his school being out of our catchment.

I am unemployed on benefits and i was wondering if i go to work full time would i have to pay for the Taxi service? Also would i have to also pay if i was just part time working?

I know i would have to pay for my other son's (He does not suffer from Autism) coach service £1,400 a year when he reaches 18 (His 17 at the moment) if i start full time employment.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

If you are getting it because it is the 'nearest appropriate school', such as he attends a Spectrum Centre, then he would, in our LEA, still be entitled to it. If he gets it due to your income level, then you would need to look at your individual LEA to see what the income threshhold is to allow for free public transport. But, I think it would come down to, does he qualify for it due to the 'nearest appropriate school'.

If you find that your going to work might have an effect on this and you could not afford to pay for it, would it be possible to make his school area the main area of focus for finding work?

    Simple solution.

    Move closer to the school.

    Can't your eldest walk?
  • If your son has a statement of special needs and that is the reason he attends an out of catchment school, then the answer is no it doesn't matter on family income, the transport will still be provided for free, Or at least thats how it works for my son through our LEA and my son gets a taxi to and from school. The best thing is to double check with your LEA as all areas vary.
