Switch before or after home move?

Hi all,

Live in a two bed flat in London on dual fuel with nPower and keen to investigate switching. Due to move to new flat in 3 weeks time. Do I transfer to new supplier (if of course I find a cheaper one) before or after the move? Conscious that Scottish Power have got a great deal on at the moment.

Thanks
Stix

You will have to transfer AFTER the move.
This is because when you move into your new flat you will automatically be supplied by the company that supplied the outgoing tenants. Don't forget to ring them as soon as you move in to give them your details and the opening meter readings. But be aware they will try to put you on their expensive standard tariff, but also don't sign up to a tariff with an early exit fee unless you intend to stay with them..
You will then be free to check who will be the cheapest supplier (it could be the existing one) and then switch if necessary. The switch takes about 6 weeks so you will be a customer of the original supplier for that time and receive a final bill from them.
