Comparison Sites?

Yesterday, I answered the door to find a Southern Electric rep who said he was trying to gather former customers back into the fold.

He was a little surprised when I was able to tell him off the cuff that I was on EON's best tariff and paid about £550pa for 6000 electricity units and about £650pa for 25000 gas units. However, he came back with not only a lower tariff but also an £80 inducement to switch.

I asked him how he could do this when Southern Electric were so far down the comparison lists and he said that the comparison sites were owned by the same foreign companies as most utility companies and did not publish all the tariffs available to companies such as Southern Electric.
What's going on? Can we rely on comparison sites or does it come down to pitting one company against another to get the best deal?

You can rely on comparison sites (if used correctly)

Take anything a salesperson door knocking tells you with a huge pinch of salt. Their livelihood depends on flogging you whatever it is they are offering ... and so it is unsurprising they will tell you anything if it means you'll agree to buy

I doubt there is any truth, has he given you precise details of t6his supposed tariff in writing, including higher/lower unit rates and what the break points are? did you check his sums yourself?

what comeback will you have 6 months down the line when you're hit with much higher bills and settp exit penalties? i'll tell you -none
  • Hi ask for a written quote from this salesman and then ask for it to be confirmed from their office. If it is correct they will be only to happy,if he says he can't do that then I would suggest reporting him to Ofgem
    Good luck

If you are considering Southern check M&S too. They were cheapest for us a few months ago, but when I checked the M&S Southern tarriff wasn't on the comparison sites.

Try Energyhelpline, they have M&S energy on their site.
