Are there really teachers that have a 'calling', a feeling that this is their purpose in life and something they must do.:undecided
I always presumed that most people go into teaching because they think they will enjoy it and be good at. The rest (particularly at secondary school) presumably do it because they don't know what else to do with their degree.0 -
I'm not a driver and have a terrible sense of direction but I can't imagine sitting on a coach and not looking out the window now and again. If you have any knowledge at all of your local area you would soon realise you were going the wrong way and spot things like road signs or Meadowhall. Supervising pupils doesn't stop you looking out the window occasionally or checking the time and realising you should have got to the zoo an hour ago.0

A good friend of mine is a primary school teacher, she hasn't wanted to do anything else since she was at primary school herself. It truly is a calling for her.
I also know a couple of the second type, but both do exist!0 -
Yeah - what they should have done was stick some blu-tak on a teacher's backside, taking care to avoid their eyes (cos teachers have eyes up their backsides didnt you know?) and stick em to the window as a back-up sat nav!
Dont be so ridiculous - of course the blame is not with the teachers. The ratio of kids to teachers is 10:1, add into that equation that the kids will probably be mega hyper due to the excitement and anyone with half a brain can see that the teachers were probably busy doing what they get paid to do which is look after the kids.
If something happened to one of the kids on the coach while the teacher was watching the road and not the kids, you would be the first to have a go at them for neglecting little Johnny!
The blame lies fairly and squarely with the stupid driver.
You obviously have not read the thread properly the teachers were not paying attention to the kids they were too busy talking amongst themselves!!!!0 -
I have only skimmed the thread but I don't remember reading anything about any other parents kicking off about 3 missed hours at a zoo!!!
I think that an occasional 'disappointment' (and that IS all this is) is actually quite character building for kids. It will prepare her for volcanic ash incidents at airports when she is older. :rotfl:
Yes I'm another teacher - I would however have noticed that we were going in the wrong direction. Being a primary teacher I have to be ready to answer "Where are we?" and "How much further is it?" so I always know exactly where we are.
OP should get over it. Promise the kid that next time the family are anywhere near Chester they will go and spend 3 hours at the zoo and then tell her to forget about it.
The teacher concerned willl not have been alone on the coach. There were probably TAs and or parent helpers along for the ride. NONE of them noticed the driver's mistake so they should all share some of the blame.0 -
Why on earth didn't the person in overall charge realise that 1 of the coaches was missing? Surely the coaches should have been travelling in convoy?
It might not be the school's fault, but I'd want to know what procedures they had put in place to prevent it happening again. The teacher's should have picked up sooner they were late in arriving.0 -
Ok, I will confess and say I probably wouldn't have noticed either and I am also going to give my opinion even though I know it won't be liked!
I would notice if I was driving or telling the driver how to get there but I doubt I would if sat on a coach. Less so if I wasn't sat right at the front as I can't look out of the side windows without feeling sick.
Sorry, but I feel your dd is blowing this out of proportion and you aren't helping the situation at all!
I find it astonishing you 'needed' to ease her distress by phone!! Just how old is she??
And you are talking of taking her in the summer holidays to pacify her...?
At what age do you feel she should grow up and accept life doesn't always go to plan? No great harm has been done at the end of the day - get a grip!
They should get a refund from the coach company but other than that, it is best put down to experience - no point either your or your daughter having a temper tantrum about it!0 -
Surely 3 hours at a zoo was ample; and she got to go to Alton Towers as well anyway.....so no real harm done.0

I've been to Chester Zoo a few times. Its pretty big, there's lots to see. 3 hours would be pushing it I think and would involve a mad dash round rather than a pleasant stroll taking it all in.0 -
Teachers - there are good and bad in every profession.
(my mum was a teacher, along with two of my aunts, my SIL and my niece are both teachers)
Patchworkcat I agree with you.
( my grandson came home from school complaining his arm was hurting
he had fallen over in pe, had told the teacher he felt dizzy and that his arm hurt was told to sit down told the teacher again in the afternoon that his arm hurt and had trouble writing told to carry on - took him to hospital- his arm was broken).0
