translink price hike

does anyone else think that translink are pushing their luck with the price hike?

for example, the metro service from where i live into town is now less cost effective than me driving in and paying the £3 parking!

if i were to pay the new rate £1.70 each way, it would be £3.40 per day, but i can park for £3 a day, and my car is a very efficient diesel car averaging 83mpg for urban driving (honestly, it really does!) so it would cost me around 6-7pence per mile, and its around a mile and a half to my work, so 3 miles a day is 21p ish, so £3.21 would be my total journey cost!

is it just me or is that a bit ridiculous?

Has it gone up from £1-60 to £1-70, or what ?

What about getting a Day Ticket - will it work from where you live ? You could buy one of those to do you the day for £2-70 if bought between 9:25am & 3pm. . .

so basically you're saying its 19p cheaper to drive and park the car all day than take the bus, risk it being late, full, not arriving at all, sit beside someone smelly lol

even at the same price as the bus why would you take the bus? the bus needs to be convenient and a lot cheaper than the car to get people on to it, forget the green argument in times like these where every penny counts, good intentions can go out the window

look at the enterprise, I have a diesel, I can drive to Dublin and back for the equivalent of £20 diesel for 4 adults, (and save 8-10p on diesel filling up down there so saving £6 approx on a fill up) why would I pay £20 or more each to get a train that may never go the whole way and may involve me getting a bus between certain points

and dont start me on the state of translinks website, its rubbish

yeah the bus services are going up 10p from next monday onwards.

i drive a diesel smart fortwo, so its not your average car, but even still, i would have driven in my old 1.8 petrol mondeo rather than the bus anyway!

the bus is never on time, ever, always over full, driven dangerously (ie they always drive off while you are on the stairs) and it rarely stops within 20 metres of the stop! also my bus takes me at the closest a 10 minute walk from my work, when i could just park 2 minutes away across the road!

there are three £3 car parks near my work (that i know of at least)

two are under the overpass near the Direct Wine Shipments place, and the other one is near yorkgate.

Can't believe I'm going to defend Translink, but theyre only putting up cash fares and strongly encourage customers to use Smartcards instead which are cheaper, and last up to a year. Doesn't help someone like me who gets the train some months....

I asked the driver about the price of the Day Ticket from next week, its usually £2.70. But they did not know how much it was going up by.

Found this while surfing Translink site.

Seems on Friday you can buy 5 journey smartlink card for only £4 working out at only 80p per journey, half the price of cash fare.

I will try it on Friday.

Sorry wont let me post a link but go to translink and lok for Metrofridays.

it would only help someone "buying journeys in bulk" which i personally wouldn't be doing, as i know i will be using the car about 95% of the time, it just annoys me that they provide an awful excuse for a service and are now charging more for something which is getting progressively worse!

if anyone else has ever tried to get a 5a at peak times they will know what i mean!!
