Not sure what to do re Microchip

We adopted our eight-month-old doggy, Bruce, just over a week ago now. He is microchipped, but the lady we had him from said she could not find his microchip certificate or paperwork. She had only had the dog for three months herself, and had not even transferred the details to herself! The chip is still registered to Bruce's owner before her. The day before we collected him, she went into the vets where the chip was fitted, but all they could do was scan the chip and give her a phone number to ring, which she then passed on to me.

I rang our own vet who said they could only do the same thing, but my question is: what can the microchip people do even if/when I do ring them..? If I don't even have the chip number, or the details of the man it is currently registered with, how can I transfer the details to our own?

I've asked the lady if she can put us in touch with this man, but apparently he is in Turkey for two weeks... I'm giving it until the end of two weeks before I try asking again, but am getting anxious about it as I can't sort out any insurance until I can get this sorted :(

Any ideas anyone?

If you go into your vet and they scan it can they not give you the microchip number? Does that not come up when they're scanned?
    I think it does

Then you can call them up and they will be able to find the record.

Or you could ring the microchip company and see what they suggest.

I'm also confused about how you cant sort insurance until this is sorted? You can add the microchip number to your insurance policy once you know what it is cant you?

I can understand why they microchip company won't do anything for you. That would make the whole microchip scheme a farce if people could just ring up and change the details of who the chipped dog was registered with.

I think all you can do it wait for the original owner to return and for him to contact the microchip people to transfer the dog in your name.

Why can't you get him insured as unchipped for the time being?

We've got a similar situation. We got the dog scanned, contacted Petlog who checked the 3 UK databases and told us it was registered with Identichip, so we contacted Identichip who then contact the last registered owner on their database (for a £6 fee) for consent or alternatively if they don't get a reply in 30 days then it's transferred to you automatically.

I would guess all 3 microchip companies operate in the same manner.

    Thanks, that's quite helpful.

I have been reluctant to insure him as 'unchipped' just in case it was seen to be lying or false information if we needed to claim. But yeah, thinking about it I suppose we could just change it to 'chipped' once this gets sorted...

It may come up when scanned, but they can't give it to us. As said by Peachyprice, that would make the whole microchip business a bit of a farce wouldn't it?

So if it was you (everyone!) would you insure for now as unchipped..? Thank you for all replies, very much appreciated x

Theres no problem insuring him - most dogs arent chipped at all and to be honest I dont think it makes any difference to the premium. Just insure him asap!! Hope all is going well.

Contact the chip register and explain the situation to them.

Thanks, I'll get onto the insurance today then. I guess I was just being paranoid about policy being void etc etc for giving false info.

I have just changed the mircochip details for my new arrival. If your with petlog all you hve to do is write to them explaining where you got your new arrival and any other information to back this up, with a cheque for £15. They then send you a form to fill in and return. Process complete.
    Hope this helps.

When my Dad had a pup he couldn't cope with we took her in (in fact she's asleep behind me now :)) I sent a letter he'd signed transferring ownership to me. I think it was something like £5 admin fee, but she registered to this address now if ever she gets lost.

And get your insurance as soon as possible, maybe sending a covering letter to explain the missing chip details.

You cannot live as I have lived an not end up like me.

Oi you lot - please :heart:GIVE BLOOD  - you never know when you and yours might need it back! 67 pints so far.

I've just insured ours with Petplan and they didn't ask if he was microchipped or not.
