Make up and hair lessons for wedding

We're having our do on a remote island with no hairdressers or beauticians to hand. I have never been the most girly of girls and so need a bit of guidance on how to deal with my hair and make up on the day.
I was thinking about getting make up lessons - can you get these for hair too?
I would prefer actual lessons (i.e. 'this is how you put eyeshadow on') rather than just turning up to a cosmetics counter and having my make up done. And I would prefer this to be from an 'independent' person who could help me work with the make up I already have and recommend what other things I need without being tied to particular brand.
Does anyone know if such lessons exist??? (I live in the Glasgow area but could travel).

Hi,
Pop into Frazers and speak to the girls at "Benefit". I got an Elizabeth Arden make over to decide the colours for my wedding ,and then a benefit one, in the end bought benefit make up and did it myself. Benefit are really good at giving make up tips, and they will give you a trial and tips free. The stuff is a wee bit pricey. But decide what you like and then if you are planning to purchase any www.makeup.com sell the products at discount price.
They do a lovely product called "Dr Feelgood" which is just a facial balm and makes the skin sooooo smooth! Luxury. They also do "High beam" which is a face shimmer and is beautiful on brides. Very subtle. My fav is the Benetint- Which is cheek glow as opposed to blusher. Its great!
Am also in Glasgow and weddings are my fav topic! Got married Oct 03, am still on a high from it!!
Best wishes.I think therefore i am....not TOTALLY thick!!!0 -
Another thought- What style is your hair just now and are you wearing an veil/tiara type idea? Will rack my brains for ideas.I think therefore i am....not TOTALLY thick!!!0

I have found Body Shop very good for first make up lessons for my daughters.
Do not try to look too different on the day but by all means look good!
It is awful not to recognise yourself! @)"This site is addictive!"

KG,
I'm in the same position where I'm marrying miles away from home and can't afford to get someone out to do my hair on the day.
I'm going to ask my hairdresser if she'll teach me how to do my hair. I reckon that with a couple of appointments i should be able to get a feel of what to do. Just need to remember to take a mirror with me for the wedding day so that I can see the back of my head.
As for make up, what about contacting a local college who do beauty therapy? You could ask if they do a short course or even volunteer to get your make up done by a trainee... you might pick up some tips and get some ideas.Just run, run and keep on running!0 -
Hey there
I would suggest maybe popping into your local Boots with a No7 consultant in and asking them for some hints and tips.... if you go in during the week at a quiet time or phone ahead and book an appointment you'll get an appointment with a really down to earth (NON COMMISSION) lady who can give you a hand
As for hair, get in touch with your local technical college who do hair dressing courses and just sit in on an appointment, or offer to be a junior for a morning running around making cups of tea in exchange for being able to watch how to put hair up... or offer to do this at a local salon... they'd welcome the help and you may get a cheaper appointment out of it!
I hope that doesn't sound tooooo geeky! Definitely go with the Boots/No.7 idea out of the two! Hope that helps....and congratulations on getting married!

most makeup counters do wedding makeup consultations and quite often they are free. don't be afraid to ask what they are doing and for tips.
beauty salons quite often do wedding makeup - might be more comfortable with this.
register with all the big makeup companies with counters online as they quite often send offers for free consultations
good luck
are any of your friends good at hair you could ask for their help. are you wearing your hair up. i once got vidal sassoon to put my hair up and watched what they did and copied it myself for loads of nights out. married to the man of my dreams! 9-08-090 -
Have a look at http://www.cmb.co.uk/
Like you I hadnt been the most girly of girls and didnt have a clue about make-up. I had a 90 min appointment in the privacy of the consultants home where we spent time going through which colours and types of make up suited me personally, a full make over plus taught how to apply it myself.
They do sell their own products but you are not under any obligation and the few bits I did buy I was very pleased with.0 -
I have learned a lot from books!
There are some great books out that show you the basics of make-up, choosing colours, the different types (waterproof, smudge-proof etc) and more advanced applying techniques.
It tells you in words and diagrams what to do and you take it from there. It's really a case of learning the basics and then practising yourself. If you're not used to make-up then it'll just be trial and error.
Good luck!Watch out people. You don't know what lurks around the corner for you![/SIZE]0 -
Thanks for all the advice so far. God knows I need it. I can wallpaper a living room single-handed and put together any flat packed furniture you put in front of me, but give me a little pot of eyeshadow and i am scared witless!!
I was at my hairdressers today nd they weren't keen on teaching me how to put my hair up (which I think is what I am planning - I am wearing a tiara). Will look in to the local college suggestions though.
Davesmum - my hair's longish at the mo.
Thanks again.

Have you considered using a bridesmaid? Presuming you are having them of course and that they would be of an age to help you.
On such an important day it would be a good idea to have someone with you to do all the things your hands will be to wobbly to do.
Take them with you to any appointments you may have, at the hairdressers they will be able to see all the bits you can't!It's not WHAT you know, it's WHO you know0
