Laptop overheating?

Hi all, I have an Acer laptop which I use with a mobile internet connection. Main problem which started about 2 months ago is that although I make sure the vents are always cleared, the laptop has started to get very hot after only a short connection time, and then without warning it cuts out completely on me, whether i am connected to the mains or using the battery. Any ideas? It's about 18 months old, I bought it in Spain and now live in Bolivia!!! The voltage is the same here as for Spain, plus, as i say, it happens when I use just battery also. I can watch DVDs externally inserted ok, tho it still gets hot, but sometimes i'm just writing e mails and it just goes on me completely. many thanks.:(

although you keep vents clean have you removed the bottom panel that covers the fan?? about 4-6 small screws normally.
if not you will find the heat sink fins are covered in fluff and stopping airflow, you will also need to remove fan to gain access to fins.

i had same problem on mine cleaned fins and put some fresh arctic silver thermal paste on joint between processor and heat sink now all ok,mine is acer also.
