Me and my friend recently bought a dell xp3 each from pc world, both the same model. After having it for only 3 days ive noticed that the fan is extreamly loud & seems to be faulty [i cant be sure]. I dont want to open the case otherwise the warranty voids so i cant really check. however this really wasnt what i wanted to spend £700 on, if i knew it would be this loud i wouldnt have bought it. Ive checked with my friend to see if his computer fan is just as loud and turns out its not, his computer doesnt even make a sound [even when mutli tasking, playing games etc yet its the same model]. Now i feel like ive been given a dodgy machine. my main question is can i claim this as a fault?
PC world refund policy states the following:
If the product has been delivered and is opened:
- You may return the product within 7 working days*
- You are allowed to open the product to inspect it provided you do so without damaging or marking the product or packaging
- The product must be unused and must not have been installed
Now ive opened my pc so im guessing i cant do much, however if the fan does class as a fault the policy states the below:
Should you suspect a fault with your product please make sure:
* You have read the troubleshooting section of the manual as it may be a common fault that can be easily resolved. For all products should the fault occur within 28 days from the date of delivery you have the option of a prompt repair, a refund or an exchange.
now ive read on the dell forums that this computer is known for fan realted problems and many people have had repairs, so ive completely been put off ever buying this computer and really dont want to ask for exchange, so am i in my rights to ask for a refund?sorry if this is posted in the wrong place and seems like a stupid thread.
thanks.

What fan?
CPU Fan
Chassis Fan
Graphics Card Fan
Motherboard Fan if it has one0 -
Don't wait just send it back for a refund and buy from somewhere else that has a better/longer guarantee even if it cost a bit more like at John Lewis.Peel back your baby's eyelid to find no nationality or religious identity mark there. Peer at your baby's eyes for them to reflect back just people-throw away your flags and religious symbols...0

Oh dear, serious error No#1 there so bear in mind what you spend £700 on at PC world you can likely easily surpass for a little over £400-500 elsewhere with minimal googling and its not like you're paying for any kind of customer service from them on top
Fans are fairly cheap, depending on which one is making the noise you'll be able to pick up a silent/low noise replacement for a few quid and swap it out yourself is probebly the easiest solution.
you buy an overpriced PC from 3rd party cowboys and what do you expect?0 -
PCs are designed to be opened and doing so should not invalidate the warranty.
To be fair to PC Dixons Curry World I don't think the OP has gone back yet, so we don't know their response. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

I believe the usual form is they take the PC away for 6-8 weeks before returning it with the original problem not fixed and a few, much more serious, new ones introduced.
You'll probably be told you need a new motherboard too :rotfl:0 -
I would be surprised if you got a refund since you've opened it & used it, but you are entitled to get it fixed. Take it down to PC world & see what they say!0

Best reply in years!!
Better idea, take the side off and have a look. Warranty should not be affected but maybe check with them for peace of mind.
If it's a simple fan, get a new one for a few quid (Ebuyer?). I would rather spend a couple of quid than go without the machine for a Month or more (and the hassle of packaging it up).0 -
You should be able to get a refund because it is not fit for purpose. However they would try to wriggle out of it and offer to send it away (takes weeks) for repair.
I would get a refund then go elsewhere for a similar spec computer and at a lot less. Buy from your local PC guy / computer shop and not only will they build you a decent PC at a decent price but will support you, install software etc and offer that bit more personal experience you will never get from PC World.
As I own a small computer shop myself I would always advise to buy locally from your local computer shop instead of from corporate chains who will treat you as walking cash machine!!0 -
