is it too good to be true?

I am being relentlessly pursued by British Gas to return to them for dual fuel. Their sales pitch is that they guarantee to beat all other suppliers until Nov 2011. They say if any other utility company lowers it's charges to below British Gas they will drop their price to beat it. All sounds wonderful but I am firmly from the school of 'if it sounds too good to be true it probably is!' so my question is, has anybody else been offered this deal and is it genuine? surely if it was the we would all simply move to Brit Gas and all make a saving? Thanks in advance for any responses

It is not too good to be true. It is a below average and unimpressive guarantee. See the answer already given to your alias's earlier question.

I doubt it, at least not from BG under the terms you say

Sounds like you haven't been offered it either, at least not from BG under the terms you say

  • Bg is the chapest Standard tariff against other suppliers..............but you don't want that, you want a competitive tariff. So it probably is too good to be true

what other answer are you referring to? this is the 1st time I have posted on this forum, I only joined last night hoping for some advice. It seems as though you & Premier are questioning if I am genuine - I am. I asked BG to call me back next Monday hoping that I could make an informed decision about whether to switch or stay with my current provider e-on. by that time.

Okay, sorry - there was an almost identical question very similarly worded a week or two or go.

But to repeat, the guarantee is only to track the lowest STANDARD tariff - and as this will be 20%-odd more expensive than the lowest online direct debit tariff the guarantee is thoroughly worthless. Even if you want to remain on a standard tariff there are other suppliers with prompt payment discounts that are likely to be cheaper.

I wasn't questioning whether you were genuine, I was questioning whether the deal you thought you were offered was actually the deal you have been offered
    (see post by specialsparky)

However, for a new user to sign up requesting advice and start hurling accusations about those who have tried to help you maybe suggests I should have questioned whether you were genuine.

  • Premier I don't think I was 'hurling accusations' I was just questioning what I had said in my post that seemed to make me seem less than genuine to you & Kim Yeovil. Kim has explained that a very similar question was posted a couple of weeks ago - it wasn't me! Anyway it seems as though their offer isn't that good so I'll be best to & do a proper price comparison using the tools on this site.
    Thanks for your comments anyway
