Hmm. Belfast City Council were as much use as an ash tray on a motorbike when we asked for help with our noisy neighbours.

Thankfully the first lot (that played loud music) moved out. And then a family with four brats moved in ... all of whom love nothing more than to get up no later than 8.00am at the weekends and throw things at each other (and the walls) until their mother screams at them at the top of her rather large lungs. Then she shouts some more. Then the door slamming starts.

The Council's reaction? They're just kids being kids, we can't do anything!

I aggree totally to the first bit but not the second about the kids.

We have noisy neighbours on both side, and one of which is playing loud music as we speak. We tryed on several occasions to get out the belfast city council. Last time of which they came out to late to hear it. Other time before that they where to busy.

As to the kids, i ofton wonder if my neighbours have a problem with our son. Our son is 13 months and we cant get him to sleep at night, we've tried everything and yeah there is nothing you can do if your baby is screaming because they dont want to go to sleep or they wont do what they are told.

All round I totaly understand about noise, we'd all love a good nights kip.
  • I'm in a very similar position to you and jenny-wren. It is horrendous to dread going home after a days work not knowing if tongiht will be a reasonably quiet night in comparison to the rave on other nights.

I have a problem with both loud, thumping bass music and with the young kids running around the laminate floored house banging and throwing things off walls. I think you should cut jenny-wren a break as if the parents gave a carp they would stop it from happening and not shout at them louder and louder. All this is achieving is making the kids think shouting and screaming is the only way to ever get heard.

I have given up complaining.. to council, police and inquiring about who the landlord is... I'm only planning to stick it out as long as I have to (realistically though it's looking at 5 year-ish) before I can move into a nicer area. I love my house, I spent weeks madly doing it up into a home but now I see it as an investment - a step on the ladder to somewhere better.

My neighbourhood is similar, not great, and complaining directly to said neighbours would end up with me being or feeling constantly physically threatened..
  • I had a run-in with my neighbour a while back about noise. He was turning his tv up pretty damn loud, so I bit my tongue a few times, but banged the wall and the guy called round and banged my door. I answered and we had an argument out the front door of my house. lol. Anyway, he was less than pleasant, but I offered to buy him a drink and shook his hand, calmed him down, and now he is dead on to me. He has refrained from turning his tv up since.

I know exactly what it can be like to have this botheration as I dreaded coming home for many nights, but hopefully each and every one of you gets it resolved asap....

Initially you can call the police whilst the noise is going on.They will register the noise. You can then inform the Housing Executive or their Landlord where applicable. Also you can tell your Environmental Office Noise Complaints at your local Council who will ask you to keep a diary of times etc. They can also come out to your place (out of hours) to hear it for themselves as proof before they take action against these tenants.Good luck

The Police will get fed up with the complaints, and this will help. What about requesting noise recording equipment from the council.
