noisy neighbours (music) - what to do?

We bought our house 3 yrs ago and we now have our 3rd set of tenants (renting) that live next door (semidetached). Each set have been a nightmare - loud music, fights with other neighbours/family members, drugs by the sound/look of them.
3rd set moved in in Jan and we have the same loud music blaring. They don't work. Him and her and 2 small kids.
She plays it from when she gets up around 9 to about 11am and now with the good days/evenings they are playing it too. Every Sat/Sun morning we are woken by their music.
We have finally had enough and on Sat and asked him around lunch time could they turn it down. They did which was great.
However it was bk on yday evening. We just left it cos it was lovely evening and we thought maybe it's normal enough. This eveing when I came home from work, he started blaring it again. Could hear the bass and words in our house. My husband asked him again over the fence and the guy was like ' You think it's loud, do you think it's loud?' Husband explained it away with the walls are terrible thin, we hear the music. To be honest the guy looked wasted. (They aren't the best sort and neighbourhood not great) Started saying he was deaf. Anyway he said he would turn it off and he went in. First music went up louder and then thank god off. We have put up with this from difft neighbours for 3yrs. What should we do next. We reckon if it's on again- notify/complain to their landlord company based here in same town and then onto environmental health? Is this the correct action to take?
We could have complained to them earlier but we are so sick of having to ask neighbours (from previous) to turn their music down, we just put up with it. I get my summer holidays next week (I teach) and to be honest I'm dreading them!

If it's noise then speak with the Council. Not sure if you can contact the NIHE if they're DHSS tennants?

Find out who the landlord is and put pressure on him/her.
Go round to their house and blare your car radio outside to see if they like it.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

We have gone to a local MP for advice on neighbours. Gave us good, independant advice. Try that, and best of luck...!
  • Hi we had the same problem - in Belfast the council have a noise officer who can issue a letter warning ur neighbours to stop and then this can be followed up by an investigation leading eventually to prosecution and confiscation of whatever is making the noise(we didn't take it this far) - try and get the other neighbours to report it too. We also found the police good although they have no official powers over noise they can come out and ask them to turn it down if you don't want to.

Our neighbour is still playing music but much less frequently and it's quieter since the letter was sent and we started complaining.

It's a horrible situation and you have my sympathy!

Hmm. Belfast City Council were as much use as an ash tray on a motorbike when we asked for help with our noisy neighbours.

Thankfully the first lot (that played loud music) moved out. And then a family with four brats moved in ... all of whom love nothing more than to get up no later than 8.00am at the weekends and throw things at each other (and the walls) until their mother screams at them at the top of her rather large lungs. Then she shouts some more. Then the door slamming starts.

The Council's reaction? They're just kids being kids, we can't do anything!
