Morrisons fish problems

I've had a few bad experiences recently.

Mackerel. Sold whole. When I gutted this, it was stinking (it must be sold in 2-3 days max as the high oil content means that it goes rancid. If stored whole, the danger is doubled).

Ray (often sold as skate). Prepacked 'fresh'. Had two of these on separate occasions. Both were stinking when opened (fish of the ray family are prone to accelerated decomposition. The test is a smell of ammonia).

Morrisons seem to be pushing the sell-by dates far too hard.

Whitehorse-I bought some cod fillets-got them home and they hadnt been scaled. I have never tried scaling fish at home but I can tell you it makes a hell of a mess!!

I have also had slightly "high" fish from them.

And the two people who mainly staff our fish stall are:

    a) Bloody ignorant-not a hello, goodbye or thankyou, just the sullen wrapping of fish, and the pained thrust as they hand it towards you.
    b) Lecherous. Nuf said.

Never buy anything "fresh" from Morrisons. Nasty little store.

I bought some sea bass from Mr M when they were about £1.50 each a few months back and they were all lovely.

Same problem at my local store. I suspect that the fish counter is not a popular posting.

Whitehorse, I would recommend you try speaking with the managers over at Morrisons. I have found at my local Morrisons there are a few managers (Store Managers and Department Managers) and found the Department Manager to be the most helpful and customer aware guy ever. I first came across him through one of the other departments but he stepped up to the mark and really helped to make a very difficult member of staff sort things out!

Through speaking with him, I have found that Morrisons has a real concern to the integrity of the source of their produce. As a result, I am now as happy to shop at Morrisons as Sainsbury's on M&S whereas previously I had always seen Morrisons as the poorer cousin of the other two. I would definitely speak with the manager, ideally of the department as s/he may be able to help prevent this happening again to you and other customers. They also will probably be a good contact if it happens again or any other issues in the future...if they show no care for what has happened (hopefully not!) then I would vote with my feet and shop elsewhere. But, I do hope this does not turn out to be the case....

Only problem with "fresh Fish" at Morrisons is that it is packed with so much ice coming into store that it may as well be frozen !
Thats why they took Kippers off the Fresh counter and into plastic bags in the fish aisle display ! they could not call it "Fresh "
