How do you define a good life? Lived to their equivalent of 'three score years and ten' and frolicked in fields of clover?

What age do you think your average cow, calf, pig, lamb, chicken etc is slaughtered?

I am very much a carnivore but I can imagine your statement causing some vegetarians to explode with rage!

I accept saying 'good life' was not the correct term - what I mean is I personally don't want to eat for example a chicken that has been kept in a battery farm. However reading the comments in the thread is making me consider not eating meat once again (I didn't eat meat until a couple of years ago).

There is NO scientific evidence proving that organic food is better for you.

There's no evidence, because scientists haven't looked.

The effect on human health is contentious, because currently there's no record of who eats organic food and which of us don't.

On the other hand, the unrestricted use of pesticides and fertilisers is harmful to human health and there is incontrovertible evidence of damage to our environment.

The UK organic food market grew 30% last year, two-thirds of primary produce being home-grown. Clearly, an increasing number of shoppers think organic is best.

  • Did anyone listen to the Food Programme, 12.30, Radio 4 today? Some vegetables today have 40% fewer micro nutrients than 50 years ago. Green vegetables have half the amount of iron than in the past.
This is because intensive farming relies on fertilizers with just a few nutrients, so the soil becomes depleated in micronutrients. The modern fertilisers grow bulky vegetables but they don't contain the nutrients because they just aren't in the soil for them to absorb.

There is NO scientific evidence proving that organic food is better for you.

The official line that there's no nutritional difference between organic produce and intensively farmed food is about to be challenged at last.

Researchers from the universities of Glasgow and Liverpool analysed milk from different farms over a three year period.

It turns out "you are what you eat" applies to cows as well as people. A pint of organic cows' milk has an average 68% more of omega 3 essential fatty acids than conventional milk.

These fatty acids are vital for normal brain function. Adequate consumption has been linked to reduced risk of heart disease and some forms of cancer, yet average western diets are generally depleted.

The Food Standards Agency acknowledges that some people may want to avoid the pesticide residues associated with factory farming and support organic production which is better for the environment and animal welfare, but the Agency has always maintained there's no evidence that organic food is better for human health.

The researchers have now asked the FSA for formal recognition that organic milk is nutritionally superior.:T
