Bad credit rating threatened, for one missed payment?

I wonder if anyone can advise me. My OH bought a sofa though --- via a credit agreement with a well known bank. The first payment was set up for June and as far as we knew went ahead. He then started getting text messages from this bank and we didn’t realise who it was, he was worried about fraud so went into a branch of said bank who told him to ignore it as they'd never contact someone like that.
They then called us at home and it transpired that it was the bank connected with the sofa and they hadn’t received their first payment as the DD had been cancelled, which my OH did not do. They also said they had sent a letter which we haven’t received. He has re sorted the DD payments but has been advised that this may affect his credit rating even though the payment was only 7 days late, and I feel they failed to advise us adequately (especially in relation to the 'fraud' text messages.
