Jobs for the over 50's..??

OP your problem unfortunately is much the same for all ages at the moment.
Good point dodger1 you are certainly not wrong.
I was made redundant in 2007 from a well paid position and unfortunately, MrsP who also worked for the same company was made redundant at the same time.
The company we worked for were excellent and were a victim of the stiff competition and the onset of the recession. Our demise was not unexpected and the blow was cushioned with reasonable packages for both of us.
I am in my fifties and MrsP sightly younger and she managed to get a job almost immediately, however, I have struggled.
My role is a somewhat niche position and one which companies are cutting down on.
I have had some temp jobs that were totally unrelated to my skills, and I have enjoyed most of them.
Does ageism exist in recruitment? Well I have had some great experiences with some of the companies I have worked for since my redundancy and ageism certainly did not raise its ugly head, however, some of the interviews I have had made me wonder.
One in particular for a supposedly reputable educational establishment in Cleveland left me somewhat dismayed.
I believed I had a great interview and presentation, but after I received no indication if I had been successful, I contacted them and a junior HR person informed me that I had not been successful and I had only been selected for interview to satisfy the organisations audit on diversity in the recruiting process. Nice!
I wish I had that telephone conversation recorded!
You will get ageism I suppose - but the organisation I am working for now (albeit on an 'as and when basis') are fantastic.
I have worked with two 70 year olds recently and teenagers. This organisation is a massive employer in our area, and I believe the age variations make it a more enjoyable experience.
dodger1 is right however - it is difficult for everybody right now and all I can suggest to those over 50 looking for work is keep plugging away and be prepared to diversify.
Yes - you will get demoralised at unreplied job applications and unsuccessful interviews, but try not to get too depressed as something will turn up eventually.
Good luck to everyone in the same position.it is the people over 50 who expect a to higher wage.
No generalisation there then!0 -
