Is it true if you wish to purchase a mac bok pro via school /college you can get a good rate. my dd1 has been saving all this year for one and it would be a great help if this was true/

There's the Education Store, for teachers/students in any educational establishment. You can access this from anywhere and see the prices on the Apple website. There's also the Further Education Store, and you can only access this from the campuses of certain Further Education colleges/universities. Discount here is bigger, and often 14%. Worth checking it out with your establishment's IT branch.

I brought my Macbook using my sisters student ID. You get 14% off (it does vary depending on what establishment the student is studying at) as well as heavily discounted Applecare (think it was £40). You get any accessories bought at the same time cheaper too (iwork etc).
