Wireless Connection/Networking Help

I have recently bought one of the Acer Aspire notebooks from Tescos. It has a WiFi card included and it has found two wireless networks. One says it is secure and the other says it is from a Netgear??, but the notebook will not connect, although it show a good signal. I susupect they are signals from a neighbour's wireless connection? So, I assume the WiFi card in the notebook is working OK, but should it connect to the Netgear even though it is not mine, as it does not say secure?

However, I want to set up my own connection with a wireless Router/Modem. So what is the best to buy at a reasonable price? Netgear seem to be a popular choice? What model and best places to buy?

And, when I get the Router/Modem how easy is it to get up and running? Is it plug and play technology or is there lots of setting up to do? Also we still have an ancient Packard Bell Desktop running Win 98SE. Is it possible to network this with the Notebook? If so, what is required? I do not think it has a Network or WiFi card in it. Can you use one of those Wireles USB adaptor things or is it a case of getting in the case and putting a card in? If so what sort of card?

Would like to get sorted ASAP so any advice greatfully received.

if the old pc is near the phone point, and has an ethernet card, you can use a wired connection for it. So all you need is a wireless router.

if you have a bt line, you need an adsl model, if cable a cable/dsl model.
