The DVLNI office is Belfast at the Gasworks gave me a wallet for my licence not that long ago free of charge.
With regards the length of time licences last, your first full licence runs for ten years from the date of your first provisional licence. I found this out the hard way this year when I realised I'd been driving on an expired licence for two months (got licence in 1996, learned to drive and passed test in 2002, renewed licence this year). For those of you that have ten years on their first full licence I would read that expiry date very carefully and if it is ten years, give Coleraine DVLNI a ring just to make sure. You don't want to be stuck with no valid licence cos it invalidates your insurance also.Life in this world is, as it were, a sojourn in a cave. What can we know of reality? For all we can see of the true nature of existence is, shall we say, no more than bewildering and amusing shadows cast upon the inner wall of the cave by the unseen blinding light of absolute truth, from which we may or may not deduce some glimmer of veracity, and we as troglodyte seekers of wisdom can only lift our voices to the unseen and say humbly "Go on, do deformed rabbit again.....it's my favourite". © Terry Pratchett in "Small Gods"

Oh, sorry folks, I didnt realise that they had started this one - I stand corrected!!! They obviously haven't exactly publicised that they now run from the date of the first issue (including the provisional).
On another note, anyone else out there ever had a DVLA file opened on them? When I sent off the provisional, pass certificates etc for my first full one, I was also changing address at the same time. The cheque was cashed and I waited.....and waited. Eventually I needed my licence for something at work and they were starting to ask for it so I contacted the works DVLA liaison person who was able to find out that they had opened a file on me as they had sent out the licence to my home address (OLD) and the mail had been returned to them. I phoned and went mad with them. They kept asking me for my new address and I responded that they already have it as it was written on the rear of the old style provisional licence where you put the change of address details on! They weren't for listening that they had really f****d up and my licence could have got into the wrong hands and created all sorts of problems for me. Eventually I gave them the new details again and they sent it out to the new address. Obviously they are only able to do one thing at a time at DVLA and not two updates at once!"Life may not always be the party you wish for, but whilst here you may aswell dance"!!!
