How can I automatically turn off an Iron after 1 hour?

Hi everyone,

We have a problem in our house with people forgetting to turn off the iron and it being left on all day or night, is there a device I can buy to plug into the socket and then plug the iron in that will kill the power after an hour, much like a timer works, any ideas?

Thanks

i use to have a multifunction iron from asda that used to switch off automatically if unused for serveral minutes or so. dont know if they still sell them but it was only £14.99 then
  • Surely it is safer all round for people to discipline themselves to switch it off?

Well obviously that would be best but this would also provide a back up, I'm not suggesting I never turn my iron off again!

Yes you can get timers that plug into a socket like this , you should be able to pick them up at most electrical shops or online.

Yes I saw that type, but they would have to be programmed for an hour each time you turn it on, I'm looking for something that when you switch it on at the wall will run for one hour then cut off, anyone know if this exists?

my son used to leave the iron on an awful lot. I was so worried about the house burning down that I bought an iron that turned itself off if it wasnt moved for a certain time. Dont know if I have heard of the sort of timer you are looking for-all the ones I have seem have to be pre-programmed

You could use the manual type suggested. Set it for an hour (any time, it doesn't matter) and turn it on by winding it round to whatever time you set it to turn on. It will turn off after an hour. Repeat if desired. You can buy them as cheap as chips in any DIY store.

Sweet jesus! I would just go mental at people until a) they remembered to turn it off or b) the house burnt down.

How lazy do you have to be to be incapable of turning an iron off? It's hardly like leaving the TV on in the background...
