Where Do I Stand?

I have a bill from Southern Electric snet on 28th may, that states i do not have anything to pay this time as i have overpaid by 44.14 which would be deducted off my next bill.

i got my next bill and sure enough i only had to pay 23.80 (was 67.94, minus the 44.14)

today they sent me a payment reminder for the 44.14 (that they said was an overpayment)

i told them i had the bills to prove that i was told i didn't have to pay and they said send them through and they could wipe it off my account.

now, what happens if it turns out its an error on their part? where do i stand? would i have to pay it?

the guy also said its probably because i haven't given them a meter reading for a while, where as i spoke to them on the 1st of this month and gave them both the gas and electricity readings!
i pay my bills off in their entirety every time!

any advice would be most welcome!

cheers
