How long should original rear discs and pads last on Honda FRV?

Just got a call from the garage advising that the rear discs and pads need changing as they are severely corroded. The car is just under 3 years old and has 25000 miles on the clock.

Is this to be expected or should i be asking for a contribution from the garage as it has been serviced regularly with them and is still in warranty......just!

i should add that the car has been driven sensibly but mainly short journeys.

Corroded not worn out.

Lack of use is the enemy of brake discs.

As LandyAndy says, rear brake discs use the least braking effort (to help prevent your car fishtailing when braking hard). You need to have quite a heavy foot on the brakes to clear up the rust, if not they just rust and rust and eventually need replacing. Quite common on cars with rear brake discs (instead of drums).

Short journeys will wear the pads and discs out quicker. The mileage is low too which means the car probably sits around for a while and rust forms on the discs causing pitting. With the short journeys the braking pressure may not be sufficient to clear the rust. It's common since the switchover from asbestos based pads to current friction.
