Disgusting Maggoty Bugs!

Over the weekend I noticed that one pot of asiatic lilys was looking rather sorry for itself and on closer inspection the stems are being methodically stripped bare by this disgusting maggot type thing that appears to be covered in its own !!!!!!! Only way I can describe it!
They aren't that big but they leave a real mess behind and just the stem of the plant is remaining in a few cases. Does anyone have an idea what these are and how to deal with them? Scraped most off and squashed them but there were more the next day again.

Oh dear, does it look like this?

If so, keep squishing, 'cos they're lily beetle larvae, and you REALLY don't want them.
I've never had to deal with them, but I'm sure there'll be someone along shortly with some good advice!0 -
I agree, Lily beetle larvae. Lily beetles are bright red and sort of oval as against ladybirds being round.
If you don't mind chemicals than provado will see them off. I prefer not to spray them. Usually I pick lily beetles off and squash them. I took a couple of leaves off yesterday that where full of larvae and put them on the ground where a blackbird made short work of them!0 -
I have seen the odd one around so I assume this is the offspring come to wreak havoc. Scraped most of them off and mushed them. When the gunky stuff is off them the larvae appeared an orangey brown colour.0

The gunky stuff is their poo with which they cover themselves to deter predators

Yes, I said I thought it was in my opening post

Not nice at all. Some more there tonight and squished 3 of the adult ones too on another pot of lilys. Hopefully the damage can be limited by regular inspections!0 -
