XP won't shut down properly

Options
Hi Guys,

I am running windows XP on an old computer of mine. I don't know why, but just recently when I come to shut it down, it will only do so on the 3rd or 4th attempt (one time it must've taken about 15 goes!).

I always make sure I close all my windows first, I then click on the 'start button', go to 'turn off computer', and then when the turn off computer window opens, I click on 'turn off.' I am left with my normal desktop, which can used as it would normally. Like I said, I have to repeat this process at least 3 times before the old dear will shut down!

Hope someone out there can help.

  • May be there are lot of hidden programs running behind.

go to run command and type "msconfig" then click startup tab and disable unused checkbox and try.

There are about 25 different startup items listed under the startup tab, should I disable all of them?

All these 25 items will start running whenever you start your windows.

So its your wish to disable those stuffs whichever you think you don't want to start at startup but you can start manually later when needed.

Hi alexanderea, thanks for your quick reply.

About 20 of these items are listed as HKLM software and HKCU software. I did a quick google search of these items and going off what people have written about them in various forums, they don't seem to be too friendly.

Do you think it would be safe to say that these are the ones that I should disable?
  • yeah it will not create any problem if you disable them all. but whenever you need to use the software you have to manually enable it.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM QUICK SCAN then click SCAN
Remove everything thats found (needs to be ticked)
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds
If anything was found then do the exact same but run a FULL scan

    reboot

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin)
