Hi all
My bank account with a&l was overdrawn by 100 with a 100 overdraft in place, i sent a letter asking them to close the account and i will pay the 100 balance outstanding, i received a letter in response on the 18th june 2010 saying that the account had been closed and i owed them 100, no further payments can be made into or out of the account and any payments made to the account will be returned. anyway my work didnt update my bank details in time so sent fornightly pay of 650 to the account which went in this morning 21st june 2010, i phoned them to confirm it had been returned and i was told no it has been credited to the account, but you only have a balance of 3 pounds. Obviously confused i enquired to what the hell was going on and they started reeling a load of charges off to me totalling 647. Now, i do not owe them a penny, i never have done other than the overdraft which i have never gone over. They told me any further requests i have to put in writing because the account is closed, but they have basically taken the 650 off me!
My questions are this, 1. how can a payment be accepted into an account on the 21st when i have a letter in front of me clearing saying any payments received after the 18th will be returned. 2. I owed them 100 for the overdraft, nothing more nothing less, so how they can take 647 off me with no notice whatsoever (it seems a bit odd that this is the amount im meant to owe them then it was 650 that was credited).
I am going to put my concerns in writing but i just wanted to make sure from a legal stance i was correct. They were talking about bloody "tracing fees" etc i just moved house and the very first day we moved i updated my details online and since then over 2 months ago all correspondance has come to this new address..... the man on the phone kept telling me "he couldnt help me" again and again and to put any "concerns" in writing!

Surely an account can only be closed AFTER you pay off the debit balance.
The charges may have been accruing for a variety of reasons - you need to ask them for a breakdown.0
