ASDA Potatoes- DISGUSTING!

Options
on my last grocery order from ASDA, i put in 2 packs of their own potatoes, each pack at £1.37 for 2.5 kg, or two for £2.

these are the ones im referring to:

now, ive bought these before and theyve been fine. bland, but fine. and cheap.
i used 1/2 a pack to make mash to go with our roast dinner a couple of nights ago. made it how i always make it, checked the pan after 20 mins and there weren't nearly cooked. gave them another 10, and they were starting to break up in the pan. if i left them longer they would have turned to mush. on mashing them, there were large parts of raw potato. i thought maybe it was just me, binned the mash, and ended up with just veg for tea (being vegetarian i just have mash and veg on my roast!)

yesterday, i let my mother use the other bag as she'd run out. again, making mash. she had exactly the same problem. they simply dont cook! surely all potatoes cook the same? not these apparently.

so that was 5kg of potatoes into the compost bin. what a waste of time, effort and money.

anyone else had trouble with these? bad batch? is that even possible??

not all potatoes are suitable for mashing - some varieties go all mushy in the pan when you boil them. Do they say suitable for mashing?
Some of the non-mashers are great for chips or fried potatoes or jackets instead ...

afraid not, i emptied them into a veg basket on day of purchase. will just steer clear of them in future i think, despite them being alright previously.

If your Mum had the other bag then get that off her and take back to customer services, The potatoes at the moment are al stored product from last years crop, there will be some problems but the suppliers do tests for cooking them as part of the quality control.

£2 is best off in your pocket than Asda !

As for the poster who said cheap place cheap product that is is BS, lots of supermarkets take the same product same producers but run a different size or in many cases a smaller profit margin !

If you have no packaging I would still go and complain ! :)

This is when supermarkets rely on people not being educated about what varieties of the product is available. If you can get hold of a bag it should state what variety they are and as already mentioned some just aren't good for mashing.

The slogan 'great for everything' means nothing. Everything? What even washing the car? It's sloppy design which they hope will entice people to buy. It's equal to 'half fat' so it's still got the other half of the fat then?

Try looking for anything Maris based and you should be okay but ones like Estima don't mash well at all. However it really is coming to the end of the life of the stored crop from last year so probably better to go for roast pots or new.

I have a bee in my bonnet about supermarket spuds they are all rubbish, I would not even bother buying them, the only ones we buy are the Albert Bartlett Rooster Potatoes they are brill, make great jacket, mash, chips anything you want to do with them, a reall good all rounder.

Tesco have started selling them in 7.5kg sacks now for just over 4quid perfect :)

That is a bit like the phrase "suitable for all coffee makers" on ground coffee. A very large Italian coffee company told me that this is nonsense, and in other countries they would do different types for espresso machines, filter etc but for the UK the supermarkets just want one generic type.

To be fair to the supermarkets after working in one I know it isn't just them trying to put one over us. A lot of customers just want to grab and go and want a "one size fits all" type of solution. I'm not saying it's all the supermarkets fault or all the customers, just that it's a bit of both.

At the moment it's best to make the most of new potatoes whilst they are in season and on offer. There's plenty of time to enjoy mash later in the season.

M&S Chopin potatoes are actually the best I've found for mashing, wedges and roasts. In fact M&S potatoes in general are very good, much better than Sainsburys which is my nearest big supermarket. I tried lots of M&S potatoes when I used to work in one of their produce departments and all other supermarket potatoes I've tried haven't been quite the same.
