Returning faulty items, instore only?

My wife purchased a breast pump online from Toys R Us about six months ago and has now tried to use it and it doesn't work. They have agreed to it being returned, however they are insisting that we return it to a branch to be 'inspected'. The nearest one is about twenty miles away.
Are they legally allowed to insist that faulty goods are returned to a shop when it would be much more preferable to return it via the Post Office?
Thanks
James

no they cannot.
Any remedies to faulty goods inder the sale of goods act should not be of significant inconvenience to the consumer.
The seller must also bear all costs associated to the remedy.
So either ask for a courier collection
a refund of recorded delivery
or a refund of your petrol and time costs travelling to and from the store.Back by no demand whatsoever.0 -

Good advice.
I would recommend the first one (or ask for a prepaid box or envelope) as it would be best if you incurred no cost of your own at all.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -

About 6 months - less or more than 6 months?
If its more then the burden of proof is on you to prove it fails SOGA in which case a 20 mile drive may be less effort than doing this.0 -
It is just over six months now, though we only opened it very recently.0
