Irritating theme tune from neighbours driving me insane.

First off apologies if this is not the right forum for it, I couldn't think of a more appropriate place. My neighbours are slowly driving me insane. This is probably going to sound hilarious, and it was quite amusing at first. From my bedroom, I can hear the X-Files theme tune. This is a regular thing, that goes on for at least 20 minutes if not more. It is really loud, especially as we have quite thick walls anyway. After a while it really gets grating, and it can happen at any hour, including when we're trying to sleep. It happens at least once a day if not more.

I haven't a clue what it is- we think it might be an alarm or a ringtone, but can't work out why in the world they don't turn it off/answer it if that's the case. We've also considered they're a huge X-Files nut who has it playing off various devices all the time. Fact remains it is too loud and the only thing I can do about is it play louder music or wear earplugs. I have never seen this neighbour around, and despite ringing their doorbell can't seem to get hold of them. Just been round now and I'm sure I heard someone shifting around (thankfully soon afterwards it went away- not sure if they got the hint or if it's coincidence!)

What can I do? Continue trying to get hold of them? Keep on playing my own loud music in protest? I was planning on writing a note as they obviously don't want to open the door, but am worried it'll seem rude and they'll make even more noise!

Please help, I'm not an X-Files fan anyway and I'm starting to twitch whenever I hear that dratted "DO-DO-DO-DO-DO-DOOOOO..." :(

I live next to some students (who have moved out today! Hurray!) one of whom is a music tech student (atleast thats what we guessing). Anyway, his bedroom must be next to our sitting room, as we hear what can only be described as a techno/bass/keyboard instrumental MESS at all hours of the day and night. We assume he is mixing music.

Anyway, as im expecting and sleeping can be quite hard at the best of times, I have often shouted "!!!!!!" in desperation more than anything! We dont foten see them about, and after knocking on the door several times, we wrote them a note that just explained what we heard and how irritating it was (obviously, in a slightly more polite tone).

The lad actually came round and apologised yesterday and we saw him moving out today! Not sure if this was of our doing :D

Thanks for the input samandona! If it were me causing the noise I think I'd prefer a note (as I'd be a bit mortified face to face) but was wondering if anyone had tried this just in case it offended and had the opposite effect... since it worked for you I am hoping it works for me! To be fair I've tried to get hold of them a few times and either they're never in or they're deliberately ignoring me (or perhaps can't hear me over constant X-Files tune??)

In my last flat we had a practicing drummer above us- and yet that wasn't as annoying because it was at reasonable hours, and at least a different tune each time! :p

We have awful problems with our neighbours so you have our full sympathies. We don't really have any solutions I am afraid except to satisfy your curiosity - we are into x-files and our guess is that they watch an episode on DVD and then that is the DVD menu, that they leave on or fall asleep to. I know it is no help to you. It sounds like they totally don't realise as it isn't as if it's a mad party or anything. Maybe a polite note through the door - that's one of the first things we tried and at least after that we weren't sitting thinking oh they don't realise.

our post clashed with me giving the advice you mentioned. Ours was something along the lines of "dear neighbours, i am not sure if you realise but unfortunately we can hear your music clearly from out flat at all times, it stops us from sleeping and we have to turn our own TV up. It is probably the building but we thought you probably didn't realise so just wanted to let you know. We would really appreciate it if you could turn it down a little, thanks"

It worked for a few weeks and then it slowly creeped back....but ours is much more lively/party music with lots of people. i hope we move soon!

Legal - That was the general gist of our note too. Except perhaps not quite as nice! We made a point of saying that they had clearly lived there for a considerable time and would have noticed how easily noise travels. And of course the sympathy of "my gf is pregnant" helps.

Boo that the noise came back! As I said, my student pests moved out today!

:rotfl:That would be so much worse!! It's odd, I can find it really funny when I'm not in the house but when I'm in and I can hear it I'm gnashing my teeth over it! To be honest any tune, even one I liked, would drive me mad on a continous loop. We heard it again this morning, conveniently in the early hours when we were still in bed. Not on.

Thanks for all your replies :) LegalBlonde, it could well be a DVD menu playing- although they are watching it at odd hours if that's the case! Seriously, it's playing all the time- middle of the night, early morning, lunchtime and evening. I try to stay in the living room as much as possible but it's a pain not being able to go and sit in my bedroom when I want, and seriously annoying when I'm trying to sleep.

I am definitely going to write a polite note tonight and slip it under their door if I hear it again. I feel really sorry for my OH as at least I'm at work during the day- he's at home and has to put up with it 24/7!

Cheers again for all the replies x
