Can we have some of this?

I'm not sure if this is true or not - can someone clarify? Is it right that Eastern European immigrants who come to England and bring their cars with them, can get away with not paying road tax by not registering their vehicles? Is there any obligation to register a vehicle? Can a previously registered vehicle be "de-registered"? I've just got a flea in my ear at the thought of some motorists driving along the same road as me, without paying megabucks for the privilege.

They do it - and often get away with it, at least until they have an accident.
But I don't believe it's legal.
You could do the same the other way round.0 -

You can do the same, if you go to eastern europe, and take your car, so long as you mot tax and insure it in the uk, you're fine. You have to visit home every six months, or even just cross the border and you don't need to register it over there.0 -
You can drive a foreign registered vehicle for 6 continuous months in this country before it needs to be registered (and taxed) with DVLA. Just as you can drive here for 12 months on a foreign full licence before you must hold a British one (and pass a test depending on country of issue).
It's a nightmare open to abuse, but closing the loophole would have to work both ways and would mean no-one could holiday in their own cars for a short time.0
