Just had an XP cd explode in the player whilst installing, currently mopping the floor.
I've met one guy who claimed it had happened to him, but in reality thought it was bit of an urban myth.
I always make copies of install disks and use those, rather than the original.
It was a Verbatim CD-R with XP Home SP3.
Anyone else had similar?
Stupid question really,
.

Happened to me too, what peeved me off at the time it was a friends disk. So ended up costing me £150 to rebuild my PC, buying his disk to replace his and one for myself so it only messes up mineOwner of andrewhope.co.uk, hate cars and love them

Yep, once about 12 or 15 years ago when CD ROM's cost a fortune, at the time I also had a Connor tape drive [ DAT ] for my backup's.
Both the DAT & the CD were working, then the gunfire and bombs started inside the PC case, unbelievably loud, I was one relieved person when it turned out to be the CD and not the DAT system.
- it's no urban myth spud17 .. .. .. it's fact !
BTW - the soddin [ shrapnel filled ] ROM worked for over a year after that. I think it was a CD-ROM Mode 2 which had just come out replacing the Mode 1, and at the time it was expensive.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. I've had that before, the disk shatters into at least a billion tiny shards.
Most of mine were contained within the CD Drive mechanism, not much at all escaped the confines of the housing.0 -
Cheers people, I sort of guessed it must have happened, but not too often.
Just wanted to see if others had on here had had it happen, also bit of a change from malware/router/wireless threads.
The tower was on the floor about 1m away, and I thought the wind had blown the front door shut, expected to hear glass hitting the floor, it was that loud.
It happened when the disk spun up after a reboot during the install.
For the hell of it I took the casing on the CD apart, biggest piece was a 40mm triangle, blew the glitter/confetti out with an airline, refitted it, and it's back working.
One good reason why it's wise to make a copy of important disks.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
"" that loud "" you said, that's why I highlighted the "" unbelievably loud "" - spud17 - it's an unexpected source of sound and remains memorable.
