Credit Card Cheques - can I still use mine?

Hi

I have some Virgin credit card cheques from ages ago, I was going to use one to clear my overdraft onto my Virgin card, then straight away transfer the Virgin card balance to a 0% card I have just got through. However I have read today about credit card cheques being banned, and that MBNA have stopped them altogether. I am not clear though, does anyone know if this means that I cannot use the ones I already have??

Thanks
Vicky

  • Only one way to know for sure. Ring them up and ask. Big mistake to go and use one when you can't and then get charged a load of interest...

    Not afaik.

I as wanting to transfer my overdraft onto my credit card to give me more incentive to pay it off, but apparently this isn't possible.

The person I spoke to on the phone said I could do this with cc cheques and that they do send them out from time to time.

I asked if using them would be treated as cash withdrawals or purchases and he said they would be treated as purchases.

I can't speak for other lenders, but this was Lloyds.

Whilst not impossible that sounds a bit on the unlikely side.

MBNA told me that I couldn't get any more, but I could continue to use the ones I have. I think Virgin is run by MBNA, so probably the same rule applies. Of course you could ask the Virgin call centre, and "probably" get a reliable answer..!

Oh while we're at it.... does anyone else do credit card cheques? I think the only other ones I've seen are from Halifax... I have Santander, NatWest, Barclaycard, Post Office, HSBC, Nationwide, but have never seen cheques from any of them. Can't use my MBNA ones because I'm on a BT LoB deal.

    I know.

I specifically asked the CSR on this and that is what he told me.
