New to the system

Following a very bad road traffic accident, I find myselfin the situation to have to claim for benefits. My questions, though, are:
  1. Being on SSP, do I qualify for free prescriptions?
  2. Will my wife loose the Carer's Allowance on my disabled son, when we claim for income support?
  3. Will a claim for DLA affect eligibility for Working and Child Tax Credits?

Your income might be too high for a claim to Income Support to be succesful.

SSP doesnt automatically qualify you for free prescriptions though.

    Hi

I am taking it that you are not fit to work and that is why you are on SSP and considering Income support??

If you claim income support and are not working you will not be entitled to working tax credits only the child tax credits.

You would not loose carers allowance if claiming Income Support however they will reduce the amount of Income support you get because of the carers allowance.

DLA doesn't affect CTC - well, it would if the DLA was for a child.

Working Tax Credit can be paid during the 28 week SSP period and will be counted as income on the IS claim.

Sorry wasn't very clear in my post i was pressuming that OP would be claiming IS when SSP stopped after 28weeks IYSWIM :D As IS wouldn't be worth claiming while on SSP

It may be, depending on the household circumstances. Even a 1p IS entitlement can be beneficial, as it is a passport to other entitlements.
