Bridgestone tyres v 'lesser brand' tyres

I've just bought a Mazda and wanted four new tyres as part of the deal as two of the current ones look like they are close to needing replacement.

The dealer have said that because the 'other' two have a fair bit of tread left, they will either replace the two with the concerns for Bridgestone ones (retailing for about £160 each online) and leave the other two on. Or they will replace all four with Radial tyres (cost about £75 each on the web).

Is there likely to be a difference performance and durability wise from the Bridgestone v the Radials?

I'm not sure whether to go for a whole new set of Radials, which means no need to worry for a year or two, or get the two Bridgestones, have those put on the back and then worry about two new fronts in a year or two's time. From a money saving point of view, four new seems the best idea, but not if the Bridgestones are likely to significantly outlast them.

I'm not overly keen in Bridgestone to be honest. Found them to be very poor in snow and they struggle to cope with higher powered FWD cars. Mine only lasted 12,000 on the front and that certainly wasn't because I was pulling wheelspins and donuts in the car park outside McDonalds.

I would second that. Have Bridgestone Potenzas on mine and the grip is poor. Also quite a lot of road noise too.

Radial is just a type of tyre and as far as I know is not a brand. I would ask the dealer to knock some money off cash so you can then get tyres of your choice. I would avoid the radials four brand new poor tyres will perform worse than decent brand part worn ones.

I would be inclined to find out what tyres were on it when the car came from the factory and just stick with them :).

They came with Bridgstone Potenzas, which dont get a very good review above. Hmm...
  • Looks like the dealer is prepared to stump up/knock off around £300 for either 2 x Bridgestones or 4 x whatevers cheapest.

If it were me i'd try and obtain the £300 from the dealer and buy some very good quality tyres for yourself.
    Toyo, Vredestein Goodyear, Uniroyal etc.

Radial could mean anything, cheap and nasty tat is still radial ply construction.

Sometimes some tyres work well on certain cars and not others. So the Bridgestone may get bad reviews but may work so well on the Mazda 2. Further research may be required but I think the OP just needs to get a cash discount so they can put their own tyres on.

Bear in mind the tyres will be about £150 trade, so that's all they'll be giving you.
