Reconditioned Engine
Options
Hello,
I have just had a totally reconditioned engine fitted to an old VW Transporter (late 80s 1.6 diesel)
It appears to be running a lot hotter on the temp display compared to the previous engine which was in it.
I have checked the coolant level and all seems fine.
I think the guys put new temp sensors onto it, could it be that these are not calibrated to match the guage on the temp display, hence why it reads as hotter??
Also, is it correct that a recon engine will use a bit of oil during the running in period?? how much is acceptable for an older diesel model to get through?
Thanks in advance

Do you know what parts were replaced or reconditioned? What warranty do you have (and please note some warranties are negated by having third parties install them).
Conceivably a new/reconditioned engine can be "tight" and use a bit of oil initially before it beds in, but I would talk to the reconditioner to make sure some basics havent been overlooked e.g., reground crankshaft fitted with the wrong size bearing shells.0 -
Hi Colino,
There is a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty on the engine. It was fittted by a garage recommedned by the engine guy.
The engine has apparantly had;
Reground crankshaft
Crack tested cylinder blocks
Re-bored and plateau honed cylinder blocks
New core plugs
New over-size pistons and rings
New main crankshaft bearings
New crankshaft big end bearings
All New oil seals
New cylinder heads
New valves and lapped in by hand
New valve guides and valve stem seals
New hydraulic cam followers (if fitted)
Supplied with fitting gaskets
‘PD’ diesel range has crack tested cylinder head
Re-faced cylinder head
All valve seats re-cut0 -

The temp sender could be the issue. On my Ford Capri, there were four different ones, each indicated by a coloured band at the base of the thread.
And remember its summer as well. As long as its not running at or near the red line, don't panic.
Yes, a recon engine may use a little oil but I'd not expect to have to top up between the engine being fitted and the first 1,000 mile oil change.0 -
Bear in mind that every engine runs at a slightly different temperature as well (even the 'same' engine in the 'same' motor).0

Hi Mikeyboy, your recon hasn't had the list you have given, that's just a generic list. For example it wont have a "New cylinder head(s)" as well as having a "Refaced cylinder head".
Better if you ask the garage who fitted it to have a look. Were you told to do an early oil change too?0 -
Hi Colino,
Yes- the garage have provided me with a folder, in which there is a warranty agreement along with a list of service requirements. The first being a 500 mile oil change, then 5000.0 -
Isn't this the second post on this engine?0

Hi Mikey72,
Apologies, i didn't realise the other posting worked, my internet crashed and I thought all had been lost!
In answer to your question, I cannot give you an exact temperature reading, as on these older thans you simply have a warning light (not coming on) and a guage, cold to hot. Mine is resting at 3/4 rather than the old engine which was at the 1/2 mark0 -
Seems hot tbh.
Half is normal, three quarters is hot.
Wrong thermostat maybe?0 -
The mechanic has changed the temp senders, so am thinking it could be this?
Its so blinkin annoying, as I was thinking this new engine was going to be the end to all my problems, and now i am being more paranoid than before!0
