virgin wireless router ..

Options
i'll probably ask this in the technical forum as well as i think it counts in both :)

rejoined virgin from sky recently, and had the installation yesterday.

the engineer gave me the wireless router before he left as I said I was happy to set it up myself. later on, when i decided to do it I realised that it was actually seperate to the cable modem so would require an additional power point, in addition to the cable modem.

so it's highly unlikely i'll ever use it.

now i know the cable modem and V+ box are still virgin's property and should be returned at the end of the contract, but is it the same with the wireless router ?

it's not a branded virgin product - it's a netgear n300.

i'm happy to return it to them if need be, but if i'm allowed to sell it on then obviously i'd be happier to do that instead ..

  • Wireless routers are normally seperate from the cable modem ... not sure what you expected?!

Anyway thanks for posting as it reminded me to get in touch with VM - their packages have been updated so you get a free modem regardless of your package (see hxxp://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/broadband/wireless.html)

(don't forget free backup services and photos too ...)
  • oh and in the old days, VM used to install custom firmwares on their routers ... not sure if they still do ... to be honest i have been using the same router for around 8 years now and never had a problem with it ... so never had the need to use the VM's version ...

    The Legal Stuff

Free wireless router offer for L and XL: Wireless enabled equipment required. Available to all new Broadband customers taking our Size: L and Size: XL Broadband services (subject to status and credit checks). Wireless router for XXL: Wireless router and adaptor are included your package. Equipment remains property of Virgin Media.

however im guessing aftera year they are unlikely to ask for it back, but they could
  • I assume you are on L or XL pakage, or the wireless router isn't free.

What you get [ D-Link 615, or a Netgear wrn2000 ] is down to what is in the engineers van, you can't choose what you get, and it is frequently a second hand recycled box.

A combined modem / router [ D-Link DSL-2640R ] is available free for ASDL where a landlord will not allow cable.

Selling it if you are caught is an offence, Virmin certainly used to take equipment [ TV cable box's or Modems etc ] back if you terminated, but I've never heard of them doing so over the last 2 or 3 years.

Others reading this may wish to correct me on the ' don't take equipment back ' issue

I guess i was expecting something like the Sky ADSL router, which is the modem and wireless router all in one.

    Random ebay example ..

    I'm on XL.

This is the router I got, in addition to the cable modem ..

(That's not me listing it on ebay BTW :))

I did ring Virgin earlier as i'd forgotten the default PIN number to unlock parental control on the box and I asked them about the router and she did say it was seperate to the package and was a "free" add-on.
