Anyone know of an account I can get for an 11 year old? Would like one with a cashcard so that he can learn the principles of when its gone its gone. :rotfl:
Mods, I have posted here as if I post elsewhere I'll get details of banks not open to NI customers.

My DS signed up for a bank account with the school...through the Bank of Ireland
He got a cash card and he gets a monthly statement!
(not that he ever has any money in it!)
I put his money in the credit union....cause he is irresponsible enough with his break money!!! :rotfl: And he cant touch it until he is 16!!:jIm going to be frugal:j:DIm going to be frugal:D;)Im going to be frugal;)Beetlejuice Beetlejuice...................:rotfl:0 -
I was going to suggest opening an account through the school as well. It's quite some time ago but I do recall it being either Ulster or Northern Bank but can't be sure about the cash card as I *think* we made deposits and withdrawals in school when the "bank" was open!0

Thanks for that. Our school don't do banking. He had a Halifax account with a book but I'm wanting to get him an account where he can go to the cash machine and take £10 out. At the moment he has a load of money in a moneybox and he thinks nothing of just using it to supplement his pocket money. :mad:0

The Nationwide Building Society does a 'smart account' and if you are 11 or over you can get a cash card, think if you are 11 you can apply online too.
Quite a few of the branches are open on Saturday so we find it handy for putting money in on non school days.0 -
First Trust Bank do an account for students from 11years. Thay also had an offer when you opened the account with £10 you got a £15 itunes card. It can be available for online banking so he can check his account etc.0

The Northern Bank do one. My 13 year old has it, and seems to manage it quite well. It certainly has taught her the principle of "when it's gone, it's gone". I think she got quite a shock at how quickly money disappeared! She can check her account online, and her Dad and I can transfer money directly into it. I'm thinking of letting my 11 year old get one once she starts 1st form, but she isn't quite as careful as her older sister, so I need to think about it a bit more!0

Halifax do a current account with cashcard for an eleven year old its called express cash(think it has to be opened in branch), they can also register for on line banking.0

I opened accounts with the Halifax for my kids a few years ago....they got a VISA ELECTRON card ...this is debit card NOT a credit card....I don't know what the age restrictions etc are, or even if the following information is still applicable, BUT I found that the BEST advantage of an electron card is that if you want to book flights with RYANAIR, there is no additional fee....0

Think I'll go with the First Trust one. The £15 itunes swung it. :rotfl::rotfl: There is a branch nearby too which he can go to himself without any intervention from me.
Thanks for all the info.0 -
Hi
Can I add on a supplementary question?
I want an account for my seven year old - doesnt have to be a cash card, but somewhere he can lodge / withdraw money he's got for birthdays etc - looked at the postoffice, but I think the minimum lodgement is £20
All the suggestions above are great, but I think they're for older kids. Any suggestions for the younger ones?
Thanks0
