Travelling in foriegn countries

How do people get around on holiday (assuming you can't speak much of the local language)?

(Especially on a tailor made break but even on a package holiday)

I find feet quite handy when getting around is required.

    Can you be more specific?
    Gone ... or have I?

Well, i was just wondering, if your hotel is not in the city centre or if your in a city as big as london walking might not be convienient.

I was looking at a number of holiday options and i was wondering how people travel around on a beach holiday, a city break or if hiring a villa?

    rental car? public transport?

It probably really depends on where, exactly.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

The same way as I get around in the UK.

Car, train, boat, plane, bicycle, feet etc.

If the opportunity arise I may try some of the more idiosyncratic local transport methods... camel, donkey, magic carpet etc.

I agree. It's no different to UK.

You just need to be aware of things, know where you are going, appear confident, and learn a little bit of the lingo to help!

Having a map of the area may help too.

Was a bit difficult in China sometimes. In one bus station I drew a picture of a bus, then 2 matchstick people, then the name (symbols) of the place I wanted to go and then the time of the bus. We got the ticket OK but they did laugh at my drawings.

Why not just say the name of the place and hold up 2 fingers?

LOL I am Chinese from Hong Kong but I think hold up 2 fingers will not help too much when asking direction :D

I will advice to print off the names of places or words you likely to use ( e.g Toilet) and bring with you to show the local people.

Remember to use Simplifed Chinese since people from mainland China cannot read Tranditional Chinese but people from Hong Kong use Tranditional but they can usually read Simplified. ;)
