cheque

I got my first HB payment today in the form of a cheque, I need to cash it on Monday but since I have a lot to do on Monday I thought I ask here to save time.

The cheque is from the co-operative bank, I am with Halifax, Can I go to a Halifax bank or do I have to find a co-operative bank to get my money?

Thanks

if it is account payee only then it has to be paid into the bank account of the person named on the cheque.
  • In some cases, you can take it to the local Council, where you would pay Council tax, and they may cash it for you. Usual ned for ID etc still applies.

You can pay it into your own bank but you'll have to wait several days for the money to clear before you can withdraw it.

You can pay the cheque into your Halifax account. You should also have been able to ask to have your HB paid into your account by BACS to save the delay in the cheque arriving and you having to take it to the bank. It should also save the council a few pence (and hence council tax and other taxpayers). You should be able to change the way you get your HB if you want to - phone the council and ask, or take your bank details in to the HB office or your one stop shop.
