Protected no claims bonus
Options
Hi everyone, just registered here so this is my first posting.
Need some help. I have a car which has 9 years Protected no claims discount. I just bought a second car (it was a bargain so had to have it) to use as a back up for puliing a trailer. When i got a quote online of 200 pounds (and four pence) using my protected no claims bonus i thought that was a bargain lets go for it. Only to have a letter arrive a week later with them stating that as i was already using protected no claims bonus on my first car i could not use it again on my second car and could i therefore pay another 400 pound (totalling 600 pound for a car which only cost me 500 pound!). I was unaware you could not use it on all cars you own.
Can someoone therefore clarify for me if this is the case or if they are trying to pull a fast one.
Many thanks

That is the case. Your own insurer may give you a second car discount tho. Ask them first.0

They are correct. With second cars one of two options applies:
Option 1: You pay full whack then build up no claims discount on the second vehicle
Option 2: Most common - Insurance company will give you a DISCOUNT equivalent to the NCB on the first car. Note this is a discount, not duplicate no claims bonus.
Give Chris Knott insurance a ring. I have had two cars for the thick end of a decade and always got really good quotes from them for my second car.0 -

If you get a discount, you will still build up the second set of no claims annually, so you end up with two no-claims from the two policies anyway.0 -

Not on any of the second car policies I've had - they've specifically mentioned no NCB will be built up.
Shop around then.
My company mirrored my original no claims (full), then as it built up after about three or four years I swopped companies for the best deal, with a second proof of ncb.0 -
I am in this position too and I think this is another typical rip off. At the end of the day it is the driver who builds up the NCB not the car. It astounds me how we all put up with this and how the Insurance companies can justify this? I can only drive one car at a time and my protected NCB is becuase I am a carefull driver not because my first car behaves it'self (rolls eyes)Returning member as system did not know me anymore0

And as pretty much most companies will give you a discount on a second policy equal to that of the NCB on the first, how is it a rip off?0
