How to get an invention (idea) going

Thought of an idea... very simple product (obviously don't want to do into detail here).
I don't actually believe it's something that is already available. I think my target market would be house builders/developers/housing association/local authorities. Possibly even retail.
At the moment it's just an idea in my head. I have no idea how it would be constructed or what materials are needed except that I'm guessing tat it would have to be some sort of flexible plastic/pvc.
How would I go about getting a prototype further developed and produced. I would just want a tangible end-product before I can start seriously looking at marketing it.
Do I use a product development company? Are these expensive? How do they charge?
Do I just go to a local form that moulds plastics and speak to them to see if they could produce? But then how do I protect the idea/concept?
What do I need to know about pantenting? Cost? Process?

I believe Trevor Bayliss has set-up a website where you can submit ideas & get loads of help, not only with design, but with regards to patenting your idea. Good luck.Never Knowingly Understood.

Thanks. I'll have a proper look at his site in the morning.
I knew I would come across this dilemma but how does one discuss their unprotected idea on a public forum ... for fear of it being plagiarised?0 -
Contacting Business Link or a local enterprise agency is probably a good first step.
Somewhere along the line you'll probably have to decide what you want to do with the idea; sell the design, license it or produce the product yourself. That might influence who you approach to develop and protect your idea.0
