School admin job, no person specification

I would like to apply for a job seen on a local council website but there is no person specification attached to the job advert. Do I complete the application form and attach my own person spec with what I believe are the essential criteria for the job (based on a previous application for a different school) or should I phone the school to see if one is available?

I'd just do a covering letter with maybe 3 or 4 points that you feel are the most essential and impressive. Don't ring the school!

Phone the council jobline that will be stated on the advert. You need the person spec to complete your application form - you need to frame your answers around the requirements staed in the job spec. They've probably just forgotten to put it on.

Some employers don't bother with them at all, there may not be one! I admit its unusual for a school though.

That's not good! I haven't heard of eteach but do you at least know which Local Authority the school is in?

Most if not all public sector employers will consider ONLY the information on the application form and will discard any attachments.

Presumably it says which Council (education authority) it's for, as you know it's in your local area. Check out that Council's website for job vacancies, it should also be advertised there.

I originally was on the council website, clicked on "school vacancies" and it takes you to eteach.com. Lots of councils use this. Usually there is an application form, job spec, person spec and maybe a letter from the school. This time there was just an application form and I know that I need to match my skills and experience with the person spec so its necessary to complete the application. Unless of course they have someone in mind and dont care that they get no replies or incomplete ones!

So, the council website is no help, no contact information on Eteach although there is a support email address so I did send off an email but doubt if it will help. Someone above advised NOT calling the school and someone else seemed impatient and suggested I picked up the phone!

I will phone the school and ask them to email me it as that now seems to be the only thing I can do in this situation.

Ring the school and ask if they have a person spec, if they don't I'd do a search on the net and find a few specs for similar jobs. This should give you an idea of the general criteria for the position. Only attach what you are asked to, normally just a cover letter and the application. Your application will normally have a section for you to provide a statement which is where you want to list how you meet the criteria for the job (with examples, this is often forgotten). If there is no statement section provide your statement as part of the covering letter.

The school won't mind you calling, if they do then they arn't the kind of place you want to be working. The initial stages of recruitment/responding to queries are normally dealt with by someone in an administrative role so you won't be disturbing someone teaching.

    Good luck!
