DVD Drive suddenly won't recognise CDs.

Options
Hello everyone.

The CD/DVD drive on our PC has suddenly stopped recognising audio CDs and I was wondering if anyone could help solve the problem.

It still reads DVDs perfectly well, so mechanically it seems to be working fine. When you put in a CD however, the drive doesn't even spin the disc.

Our computer is an HP Pavillion S7520.uk with Windows XP and the drive is an HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-H20L model. We've updated the firmware using the HP site, but it didn't help in the slightest.

I'm at a loss as to what else to try.

Many thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Perriwhistle.

I've got the same PC here , had the same problem as the drive had failed. Was a straight swap with another brand to get it going again

Do you mean to replace it with a new drive? Can anyone recommend a good one?
    Thanks.
