The hosting company refuse to inform us which company we are now registered with as we are 3rd party.

do a whois on your web site address
http://whois.domaintools.com/
then bottom bit
Name servers:
ns3.ukdnsservers.co.uk 72.1.201.151
ns4.ukdnsservers.co.uk 72.1.216.99
should give you a clue as to who is hosting it
and this bit
Registrar:
Fibranet Services Ltd [Tag = FIBRANET]
URL: http://www.freeparking.co.uk
who the registrar is (may be your original host though) and you can contact them
the best idea is always to retain ownership of your own domain and point it at your hosting , means if this happens you can get a new host and be back on air within a few hoursEx forum ambassador

Hi,
Thankyou for your info, have tried "who is" and used e-mail, but this has been returned as failed--?0 -
Tell me your website address and I'll look for you...Just another dumbass with money...0

The chances are that if the company you were directly a customer of has vanished, the company they were renting the server (or just a plain old reseller account) from will have wiped the server/deleted the account, and your data with it.
This is why you need to keep your own backups. If you tell vswm your website address he(?) will probably be able to tell you who actually owns the server your website was hosted on, but it'll probably have been wiped by now, so the information will be useless to you. Hopefully my pessimism is misplaced and they either haven't wiped the accounts yet, or they'll be able to pull it out of a recent backup, but generally these things are run at very low margins so having an old customer's data taking up space doesn't make sense.
In future, get a backup plan. If it's a dynamic site, backup as often as is practical in relation to how often the site changes. Don't trust a host with your data. Accidents happen, hardware fails, datacentres go up in flames. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -
