Hi peeps,
We have virgin broadband, but we only have one port/network cable coming out of our modem router thingy, this causes problems when more than one person wants to use the net or play games online (xbox etc).
Is the solution to buy a router that has multiple ports and can i then just plug the network cable from the virgin router into the new router which will then give me multiple ports??!!

Yes - but make sure it's one for cable and not an ADSL one.0

sounds like what you actually want is a switch.
something like this should do you for 7.99

obviously another cable router that has an integrated switch will work but is unnecessary.0 -
some examples here (coz I like D-Link kit
):-

note you only need a router, not a modem/router....your existing cable modem feeds the router and away you go........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
Correct.
Your router uses a networking feature called NAT. This allows you to have your cable modem have a single IP and for all your computers to use this IP.
A router, switch, hub and a modem are all different pieces of equipment. However, they're often bundled together and cause a lot of confusion.
Remember, you modem has a finite speed. When your machines, or Xbox, are online and using bandwidth this will have a negative effect on your other machines since you're essentially sharing that finite resource.Just another dumbass with money...0 -
Ask Virgin for a free wireless router.!!
