My laptop is nearly at the limit of its internal memory. I have tried to delete unused items but it doesn't free up much space. Is there a better option to free up and also speed up the laptop??

Memory or disk space?
Deleting files doesn't free up any memory.0 -

If you mean the hard drive then maybe you need to cleam up the temp folders and reduce the size of the recycle bin as that usually reserves 10% of the hard drive space that you can't see.0

RAM is used by applications actively running. For example, next your clock you see running applications. These, mostly, sit in RAM so reducing these will free up more RAM, thus more space for active applications to execute. You can disable these actively starting up by running 'msconfig' in command line and selecting Startup Items and unchecking them all. This will improve boot time (because when you boot all those applications are starting) and will free up RAM for things you actually want to get done. However, be 'CAREFUL' here.
When you have multiple applications running on your desktop these all use RAM. However, your operating system has something could Virtual Memory. It works like this:
If you have 2GB of memory and all your applications and operating system are using 2.5GB the extra 500MB comes from somewhere else. This somewhere else is disk space (your hard-disk). This is called SWAP'ing or SWAP space. This is much slower than reading from RAM, hence a decrease in performance.
Improving space in RAM and space on your internal disk are too different things. You could have 5TB of disk space and it'll never make your computer 'slower'.Just another dumbass with money...0 -
buy more memory if you have space ,also you could buy another hard drive and put original in hd case [about £10 ] that you could p[lug into l/t. very easy to do .0
