HELP!! with my npower bill

skates2010
I moved into a house with a prepaid gas meter in and it was costing me a fortune. I enquired about getting a normal meter in and they worked it out with looking at my usage to be about £39 per month.
I was happy with this and signed up to a contract and got a meter put it and paid my direct debits of £39 per month since I had my meter installed on 28th Jan this year.
I have not had a bill or heard anything since so I phoned Npower up to see where my bill was, and got told I would get a bill every six months. I asked her how much my bill was and she told me since installing I had a bill of over £600, taking off my direct debits I will need to pay £500+ (sorry cant remember exact amounts as I was in shock on the phone).
My meter reading when installed was 09210 and is now at 09984.
I was just wondering if this seems right because to me it seems to be quite high.
Would be really happy if anybody could help me understand this abit more. Thanks

£39 seems much too low. £100 a month with most of the bill being in a very cold winter could be right.
If you are on DD then you need to tell them that THEY set your payment and if they are wrong then you would like the debt repaid over 12 months and added to your new payments. But be prepared it will be over £100 per month until you clear the debt.
Without knowing the size of your house of number of people, is it gas or electric or both? Do you have storrage heaters? Without all the info it is difficult to offer anymore advice.
Phone npower and ask to speak to their Energy Efficiency team, you seem like you need some help in reducing your usage.
Finaly, do your meter check as I advise people, switch everything off and make sure your meter has stopped if not check your property again and if the meter is still moving, you have a problem. Contact npower and ask for an engineer to call.
Good luck you know where I am0 -
9210 to 9984 is 774 KWH used
not knowing how long its over and your area i'll have to guess the rest.
the bill would be at around 13p per unit so 774 * 0.13 is about £100 plus 5% vat is £105.
Maybe the extra is from the Pre pay meter you had. ask what debt was transfered over from the pre pay meter and why so much.
That should help.0 -

thankyou for responding.
My house is a 2 bedroom terraced with a lounge and kitchen/diner so its not a big house. In my house is 2 adults and a 3yr old.
I didnt think we actually used that much gas.
I have a back boiler aswell so dont know if this expains anything.
They worked out £39 per month on the amount of gas Id used since being with them. I moved into my house in june, so from june to jan they estimated with the gas Id been using it would be £39 per month
Also this bill is from Jan 28th to June so approx 4 1/2 months, and I didnt have any debt on the pre paid meter.
I live in Oldham aswell if that helps.0 -
I don't post on these boards but jJust an idea…
Does your new gas meter say “m3” or “ft3” on it? As it’s just been fitted I’d assume it was metric. A gas meter reads ‘units’ not kWh like an electric meter. (Well, at least to my knowledge)
For
774 metric units the kWh = 8629kWh (units*1.02264*39.25ish/3.6 conversion)
774 imperial units the kWh = 24422 KWh (units*2.83*above)
@ say 3p/kWh metric would bill around £260 and imperial £700+
It would be a convenient solution that you have a metric meter and that NPower have mis-recorded your meter as imperial … might pay to check and ask.0 -
My Bad with the bill working out.
Call npower and ask for all the details and write as much down as you can and come back on here and we'll try and help.0 -
If you have only provided the reads with numbers in black, before any decimal points then you have whats known as a five dial meter and is metric. As mentioned above worth just checking on the meter, also the meter serial number will most likely start G4......
assuming this your bill should be approx £293.54 inc vat depending on unit price. I worked approx out as follows
774 metric units the kWh = 8629kWh (units*1.02264*39.25ish/3.6 conversion
8629 x 0.0324 pence per unit = 279.57 = 5% vat = £293.54
This over winter is only £48.92 per month and i would expect your usage to bel less over the next 6 month period. so given this £39 does not seem to be all that far out and may actually be right.
Most likely they have your meter down as imperial which will produce a bill 2.83 x larger. Or you spoke to poor advisor who worked it all out wrong, be worth ringing them and checking the details.0 -
thankyou for everyones replies. I have given npower a call and found out that I was quoted on an imperial meter when ive got a cubic one (dont really understand the difference though) and have now got a correct bill of £37 to pay. Im so happy so thankyou to everyone who helped0
