Readings your posts it implies that the opening reading was an actual reading and that interim bills were estimate so that when you gave them your final reading it did not fit the pattern ie. opening was 1000, then estimated bills based on 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400. You then give a final reading of 3000 which does not fit the 100 units per quarter 'profile'. Given that prices have gone up and down they may now have worked out the bills based on say 800 units per quarter and the price in force at the time.

The difference is because, our final bill was for £90 (The difference between the last bill and our final correct reading).

After paying the bill, British Gas then decide the final reading doesn't match the profile and have picked an arbitary date to go back to and rebill us for 2 years of useage.

This is the newly calculated bill is the one for £2000.

After a final bill, can they do this?

Our last reading would be high due to:
    1. A very cold, extracted winter.
    2. Our boiler was rubbish and we had the sytem flushed to improve performance (at a cost over £600).

Yes they can, but they would also have cancelled/recredited the previous bills & payments.

I suggest you contact BG in writing and get them to explain what they have actually done, because such rebilling to allow for varying unit prices over time would not create an outstanding balance of £2k.

Btw, I thought you said it was the last actual meter reading they recalculated from - far from an arbitrary date.
