Which new laptop Samsung or Acer Timeline Travelmate?

We are in the throes of planning to become a his and hers laptop family. We currently have an Acer Extensa which my OH uses and likes. He favours passing it on to me, as he uses it for work, and as he is on the road a lot and taking over the new one which would probably be another Acer left to his own devices.
Really though I fancy a Samsung R580 15.6 inch HD notebook (Core i3-330M, 4Gb, 320Gb, DVDRW, Win 7 Home Premium). he wants an Acer Timeline Travelmate 8371-944G32 which has a similar spec and he says is lighter to handle and has a long battery life.
It is true the Samsung is a bit heavier but that seems to be about all. The OH is a bit heavy handed though which is partly why I favour the more ruggedised Samsung.
Prices are comparable. Basically we need a dual core processor, a good amount of RAM, large HD, reasonable battery life (one of the reasons for replacing the current one), built in Wifi and MUST have card reader and CD drive. (He has a lot of work software on CDs).
Any views also on which one to go for, also which OS ?
